The Fifth WINIR Conference will be held in East Asia, in the fascinating city of Hong Kong, a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China located south of the mainland Chinese province of Guangdong and east of Macao (click map to englarge). Its strategic location on the Pearl River Delta and South China Sea has made it one of the world’s most thriving and cosmopolitan cities, nicknamed the "Pearl of the Orient".

Hong Kong as we now know it was born in the aftermath of the First Opium War (1839-1842), when the Chinese defeat led to the cession of Hong Kong Island to Britain in perpetuity under the Treaty of Nanking. It became an official Crown Colony in 1843. Within 60 years, Kowloon, the New Territories and 235 Outlying Islands were likewise brought under British control. In 1898, a 99-year lease was agreed. Sovereignty was transferred back to China in 1997.

Today's Hong Kong, the world's fourth most densely populated territory, the inhabitants of which enjoy the longest life expentancy in the world, is one of the most significant global financial hubs. It ranks highest in the Financial Development Index produced by the World Economic Forum, and during the last decade it has been a world leader in IPOs. Hong Kong is one of the most competitive economies, and an important hub for global trade. With its iconic skyline produced by the world's highest concentration of skyscrapers, Hong Kong is a spectacular and unique place. It is a vibrant, busy city with lots of things to do and see (more information here).

The conference is hosted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Law, one of Asia's leading legal education providers with a global perspective and a strong reputation for excellence in both teaching and research. It is currently ranked in the top 50 law schools in the world (see here).
