WINIR 2014
Inaugural WINIR Conference
Institutions That Change the World
11-14 September 2014
Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, London, UK
It is now widely accepted that institutions, broadly defined as systems of established social rules, are key factors of social life. Institutions affect economic performance and human well-being. Although the nature and role of institutions are matters of active research in several academic disciplines, including (but not limited to) economics, history, law, philosophy, politics and sociology, there is a need for the development of shared understandings that can help promote creative conversations across disciplinary boundaries.
WINIR has been established to advance this agenda. Unconfined to any single discipline, WINIR welcomes contributions from any approach that can help us understand the nature and role of institutions.
The Inaugural WINIR conference was held on the grounds of the stunning Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London, UK. The conference started in the afternoon of 11 September and finished on the morning of 14 September with a guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the Royal Observatory, home of the Greenwich prime meridian.
Keynotes lectures were given by:
Geoffrey Ingham (University of Cambridge, sociology)
Timur Kuran (Duke University, economics)
Katharina Pistor (Columbia University, law)
Barry Smith (SUNY Buffalo, philosophy)
Kathleen Thelen (MIT, politics)
187 delegates from 37 countries attended this event.
The conference was organised by:
