WINIR 2014 - Venue
The Inaugural WINIR Conference was held in South-East London, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, on the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College, currently used as its main campus by the University of Greenwich.
The Old Royal Naval College, with its iconic baroque buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren (architect among other things of St Paul’s Cathedral) and built between 1696 and 1712, is part of the UNESCO Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site (more information here).
Maritime Greenwich extends behind the Old Royal Naval College to the beautiful Greenwich Park that contains on a hill overlooking the Thames the Royal Observatory, the first purpose-built scientific building in England. Since its completion in 1676 the Observatory has been a leading centre for research into astronomy, time-keeping and maritime navigational measurement.
The Greenwich prime meridian, an institution that changed the world, was established at the Observatory in 1851. It was internationally adopted as the world prime meridian in 1884. Other attractions on the site include the beautiful Royal Naval College Chapel, the spectacular Painted Hall, Queen’s House and the National Maritime Museum.
