The WINIR Symposium on the Varieties of Capitalism featured keynotes by Ian Gough (LSE, UK), Geoffrey M. Hodgson (Loughborough University London, UK), Gregory Jackson (Free University of Berlin, Germany) and Jonas Pontusson (University of Geneva, Switzerland).
The Fourth WINIR Symposium took place in Stratford, a metropolitan district in the North-East London Borough of Newham (UK), mostly famous for its spectacular Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park which was built to host the 2012 Olympic Games.
WINIR SYMPOSIUM ON VARIETIES OF CAPITALISM (LONDON, UK, DECEMBER 2019) — Is there a tendency of different capitalisms to converge, or do diverse forms of capitalism still persist, aided by historical path-dependence and enduring institutional complementarities? Can capitalisms escape their own cultures and histories?
Videos of the keynotes given by Virgil Storr, Deirdre McCloskey, and Richard Langlois, along with a video of the remembrance session featuring Ludwig Lachmann’s former students, were produced by the event’s generous sponsor.

The WINIR Symposium on Ludwig Lachmann featured keynote by Richard N. Langlois (University of Connecticut, USA), Deirdre N. McCloskey (University of Illinois at Chicago, USA) and Virgil H. Storr (George Mason University, USA).
The Third WINIR Symposium was held in Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa. Also known as Egoli (which means “place of gold” in Zulu), Johannesburg started as a mining town in 19th century when the discovery of gold on a farm triggered a gold rush.
WINIR SYMPOSIUM ON LACHMANN (JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA, APRIL 2017) — Ludwig Lachmann (1906-1990) was an outstanding social scientist whose achievements ranged across a number of disciplines, including economics, sociology, law and philosophy. Well known for his work on Max Weber, his analysis of the limitations of equilibrium economics, and his contributions to the development of Austrian economics, Lachmann’s legacy revolves around three central themes: radical subjectivism, hermeneutics and human agency; market process and legal order; capital theory and macroeconomics.
